Where You Will Be Staying

Location: American University, 4400 Massachusetts Ave, NW, Washington, DC

Summer interns reside on the Tenley Campus of American University, situated near the Tenleytown Metro Stop.

Room Specifications

Typical rooms measure 12’ by 15’ and include:

  • Two standard twin beds
  • Two desks and two chairs
  • Closet space for two people
  • Full carpeting and overhead lighting
  • Air-conditioning with individual controls
  • Cable TV access
  • Two computer jacks for AU’s EagleNet network

Residents may rearrange furniture but must restore it before departure. Mini-refrigerators are permitted or available for lease.

Floor Amenities

Each floor provides:

  • Laundry facilities
  • Kitchenettes with stove and microwave
  • Lounge with cable television
  • Communal bathrooms and shower facilities
  • Mail and package receiving services

Staff, including a full-time Resident Director, offer assistance throughout the stay.

Housing Policies

  • All floors are coeducational
  • Smoking prohibited in all residence halls and common areas
  • No alcohol permitted in residence halls

Room Types

Most students stay in double-occupancy rooms. Limited single rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Roommate requests are accommodated when possible, with early joint applications encouraged.

Furnished rooms include:

  • Individual air-conditioning units

  • Laundry access on each floor
  • Common cooking and social spaces

On-campus access includes:

  • Jacob’s Fitness Center (short shuttle ride from Tenley)
  • Free parking
  • Shuttle service to metro
  • On-campus convenience store

Summer Guest Card

Upon check-in, each resident receives a Summer Guest Card serving as:

  • Residence hall access
  • Fitness center identification
  • AU shuttle pass

Lost cards should be reported to the front desk. Temporary access cards are available from Public Safety.

Athletic and Recreation Facilities

No additional charge for access to most university facilities:

  • William I. Jacobs Fitness Center with weight/exercise equipment and locker rooms
  • All-weather running track
  • Outdoor tennis and basketball courts
  • Outdoor baseball field
  • Indoor basketball courts in Bender Arena
  • Indoor swimming pool (lap swimming, restricted summer hours)

Individuals under 18 require parental/legal guardian permits for facility use.

Check-In and Check-Out

Housing availability runs from early May through the first week of August (specific dates announced later). Early check-ins and late check-outs are not permitted. Front desk registration operates 24/7 during designated periods. Upon arrival, residents receive room keys, mailbox keys, parking passes if needed, and welcome packets.

Packing Recommendations

Recommended items:

  • Laptop or computer
  • Umbrella or poncho
  • Bed linens, blankets, pillows
  • Bathrobe
  • Towels and bathroom linens
  • Television/VCR/DVD player
  • Clothing and comfortable shoes
  • Toiletries and shower caddy
  • Mini-refrigerator (lease available)

Prohibited Appliances

For safety reasons, these are not allowed in rooms:

  • Personal air conditioners
  • Open-coiled appliances
  • Grills (including George Foreman models)
  • Steam vaporizers
  • Halogen lamps
  • Waterbeds
  • Immersion coils
  • Microwaves
  • Oil, kerosene, and gas lamps
  • Appliances connected to multiple extension cords

Kitchen-Approved Appliances

These may only be used in designated cooking areas:

  • Coffee makers
  • Popcorn poppers
  • Electrical appliances with heating elements
  • Rice cookers
  • Hot pots
  • Toasters and toaster ovens
